About Score

The award-winning Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum Of Recreation & Education) program was developed by the Anaheim Ducks Hockey Club in 2005 with the goal of making a positive impact with youth in local schools and hockey communities throughout Southern California. Based on the team’s goals in the community and through funding from the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, Ducks S.C.O.R.E. has been made free of charge to all its participants. The program uses the sport of hockey to teach educational themes, encourage healthy and active living, reinforce the importance of positive character building, and reward youth for their dedication of pursuing academic excellence. Through its initiatives, Ducks S.C.O.R.E. has contributed to the educational landscape within traditional and non-traditional settings while impacting over 25,000 students annually. It provides educators with viable alternatives to costly programming, especially during times when funding for extra-curricular programs have decreased, or in some cases, cut entirely. As a testament to the program’s success in its community, Ducks S.C.O.R.E. has received local, state, and national awards from educational organizations; it has also inspired local educators, organizations, and museums to include the use of hockey within the walls of their educational settings. Ducks S.C.O.R.E. in its entirety, is a multifaceted program. It is comprised of two major parts, an in-class education initiative and a physical education curriculum featuring street hockey.

The Programs
The In-Class Education initiative consists of three aspects: school supplies donation, Reading Is the Goal, and First Flight Field Trip. Through the school supplies program, teachers are given sets of school supplies to use as an incentive to motivate students in the classroom or simply to reward students for accomplishing educational goals. Reading Is the Goal assists teachers in communicating the importance of reading while also cultivating the love of reading among students. This program has been documented to raise reading aptitude among students and school test scores. Through the use of a rewards system, students, classrooms and schools will have a chance to win great prizes provided by the Anaheim Ducks. Lastly, the First Flight Field Trip is a one-day educational activity that combines the excitement of NHL hockey with challenging educational concepts through an interactive Ducks practice and skills competition at Honda Center. Students will be able to apply their classroom knowledge, such as math and science, to the exciting game of hockey.

The Ducks S.C.O.R.E. physical education program was designed to teach students the fundamentals of playing street hockey as well as the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The team supplies everything a school needs to provide a quality street hockey program to their students. These items include street hockey equipment, student handbooks, the 10-day curriculum and instructor’s manuals, and hockey skill set training for physical education instructors. The specialized 10-day curriculum gives students foundational skills needed to play street hockey. It highlights safety, respect for others, as well as the basic hockey skills such as stick handling, passing, and shooting. Each lesson day is designed to meet the guidelines of California’s educational standards requirements for physical education.
