In an effort to promote the importance of reading to its community, the Anaheim Ducks have created Reading Is the Goal as a FREE program to all 4th grade students in Southern California. Reading Is the Goal is part of the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. In-Class Education Program and rewards students for their time spent reading per day within a 30-day period. Its goals are to convey the importance of reading as the foundation to success and to begin cultivating a love for reading amongst the participants in this program.
Teachers who sign up for this program will receive an In-Class Kit containing school supplies and Reading Is the Goal materials. Upon receiving the materials, teachers who initiate this program in their classrooms can choose any 30-day period between the dates of January 1 and March 31. During these 30 days, students will select books from a 4th grade book list and record their daily reading times on an official Reading Is the Goal brochure. The Ducks will then reward students based upon their participation and personal achievement. Students can also work together to win great prizes for their classroom and school.
The program has also received recognition from the International Reading Association's (IRA) state and local chapters. It has received the Celebrate Literacy Award for its significant contributions to the promotion of literacy and its effectiveness of raising reading scores among its participants. National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America
To supplement its own Reading Is the Goal program, the Anaheim Ducks also participate in NEA’s Read Across America program, a national program intended to motivate students to read. Ducks front office staff, mascot Wild Wing, Power Players and Ducks players (depending on the Anaheim Ducks season schedule) are sent out to various schools and libraries to read in front of students. If you would like to have a Ducks representative at your school or library for this event, please email score@anaheimducks.com. We will consider each school’s request based upon our available resources.
